Today, everyone at the Soulsville Foundation (which operates the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Stax Music Academy, and The Soulsville Charter School) is deeply saddened about the passing of Isaac Hayes. Isaac's contributions to the music industry are as great as that of anyone in American history, but we miss him more as a friend and beloved member of the Stax family.
Isaac Hayes was one of the most genuine, humble, and sweet people we have ever known. He was always cheerful and ready to help anyone in any way that he could. He did that on a daily basis. Helping others was a tremendous part of his life.
Our thoughts go now to his family, particularly to his wife Adjowa and his children. Our thoughts are also with his dear friend and Stax pioneer, David Porter.
We are still in shock. We will miss Isaac so much. As do millions of others around the globe, we cherish Isaac's unique and bigger-than-life personality and his even bigger heart.
Isaac, we love you.

Tim, the second I heard I posted a tribute to him at my blog; Isaac Hayes was an original.
RIP BROTHER
YOU ARE ALWAYS IN MY HEART.
Words can't really express what a tragic loss this is.
Isaac was indeed a genius. May he rest in peace.
Although the sadness is overwhelming, we must turn to his music and remember his generosity to give us 'Joy'. There will never be another, and he will never be forgotten. We are all indebted, the world is forever a brighter place. Thank you Isaac Hayes.
All Props to Issac and Prayers to His family, David Porter and all of the STAX family.
Thanks for the Memories
"I hope its not a crime, cause I'm Guilty .............RIP
Words cannot sufficiently express my deep sadness at the sudden passing of this wonderful man, whose music first touched me across the distance of the Atlantic Ocean over 30 years ago. His contribution to soul was simply immense, and everything he did, both inside and outside music, was characterised by a great compassion for humanity: truly a man whose life made a difference. We shall not see his like again, and my thoughts are with his family and friends - I hope that over time they will see his as a life fulfilled, not taken away.
I feel as if I had lost a close member of my family my prayers goes out to Isaac Hayes family and friends.
We love you "Black Moses" and Miss you very much!!!!
Sincerely,
Amjad

He and his music will be remembered for all time. our thoughts go out to his family and fellow band members and friends. God bless Issac Hayes and his work.
While his passing is sad and untimely his music is joyful and full of love and will be enjoyed for a long, long time.

i miss him right now.
I was playing my "Theme from Shaft" yesterday, Sunday before I heard that he died because I was getting ready for my class reunion birthday celebration of all of us turning 55 years old this year and to play it in two weeks in Birmingham, Alabama. I fell in love with Memphis in 1983 because of Isaac Hayes and
Stax. I would go the Ike's Place and ask is Mr. Hayes in?.. and the Hosts and/or Hostesses would remember me and laugh and say, No Maam, and I would tell them to tell Mr. Hayes that I came from Knoxville to see him and eat at the restaurant and listen to him sing to me and told them, I'll be back to see him. I will always play the music and feel the soul of Isaac Hayes.

Early in our relationship, my husband and I loooovvved "Joy" Played it constantly. We've been married for 29 years and STILL love it. We visited your city a couple of years ago. Loved the restaurant and the Staxx Museum, The Lorainne Hotel, etc. We were so impressed by all that he accomplished in his life and especially in Memphis. I wished that we could have him on radio here, in Illinois; Love his voice. To Isaac Hayes' friends and family, we are so sorry for your loss, but there is not doubt, he is now experiencing his eternal "Joy"
Isaac Hayes was a pioneer whose music moved my soul... gone way, way too soon. You are already missed.
Along with Marvin and Curtis, Isaac was one of the greatest. A true inspiration. I'm gonna miss you man.
Issac was one of the most original voices in American music.

I was a student at Langston University in Oklahoma in the early seventies and Mr. Isaac Hayes got me through that era with his music. I remember driving to and from college and Mr. Hayes's "Never can say Goodbye" was in the old eight track.
I love the man for his talent and the fact that he's a good person.
I will always remember Mr. Hayes and his legacy.
Soul music has lost today one of its 'founding fathers'. Mr. Hayes will remain in our heart and memory as one of the most talented composers the world has ever known.
Respect!

Always loved Mr Hayes’ music, for me it was the soundtrack to dreams of a different space. I visited Stax once as a homage and bumped into him, he radiated strength and sensitivity all at the same time and his music still radiates on.
I remember working with Isaac back in the 70's and taking him, his group and his wonderful music to perform all over Europe. What a great man to work with and enjoy his many talents. You will be missed.

We love Isaac Hayes in Knoxville, TN.
He will be missed.

My thoughts & prayers are with Issac's family & the entire STAX family. As a lifelong Memphian,I have grown up with his music right in my own backyard..what a great artist. I will always cherish what he gave us all.

www.AllMemphisMusic.com was a friend of Isaac Hayes and we will never forget you through your great musical contributions.
What unbelievably sad news. I'm just playing "You don't know like I know". I remember seeing Sam and Dave doing this one at Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1967. Didn't know much about Isaac then but as soon as I started collecting all the great soul tunes I could not believe how many fantastic numbers Isaac and David Porter wrote. And then when he started recording himself everyone knew what a truly great artist he was. He will be much missed by all true soul fans here in England. Must go to my jukebox and listen to "Shaft".
On Sunday, 8/11, I read the AP news report online about 10 minutes after it was posted, and couldn't believe my eyes. I'd taken the Shaft CD to my car again in the past week, which I return to often because it is very meditative--some of the best instrumental jazz I've ever heard by any yardstick--but couldn't bring myself to listen any more that day after I heard the shocking and mournful news. Isaac Hayes was an accomplished musician, an influential entertainer, a fine actor; and that's all well and good. But I think more than those things, I respect the leadership he sought to provide the black community in Memphis and nationwide, especially in the wake of MLK's death and when he was awarded the Oscar for Shaft. You have to admire someone who seeks to give back. That will be as much a part of the legacy of Isaac Hayes as the music, movies and TV programs, and he will be sadly, sorely missed. In fact, I miss him already. He was one of the few remaining Stax pioneers, and I'd have loved to have had a talk with him about my favorite record company.
Our family is deeply saddened by the loss of such a great talent and person. He was a great part of our STAX memories. We are proud to have known him and blessed to have called him our friend. Thank you, Isaac, for being so dear to my grandmother, Estelle, and making music that will always be treasured. I only hope that my upcoming book, "STAX in Black and White" will honor your memory.

Granddaughter of Estelle Axton
I always have mixed feelings about Isaac's career at Stax, but Lord knows he and David Porter were possibly America's finest songwriting team from that era, and as Hayes' life went on, he continued to be a real ambassador for the music, for education, and for simply having a good time.
I imagine the party's getting louder and louder somewhere out there as Soul truly Comes Home.

When I think back on the days of 70's I think of concerts in those days. It was nothing like Guilty, Shaft, By the time I get to Phoenix, etc. The band members and friends. He was one of a kind. My prayers goes out to his wife and family, friends and the entire Stax's family.
Isaac,
Where ever you are my brother, I want to personally "Thank-you" for writing, composing, and delivering "real soul music" during the turbulent times of the 1960's. Just to hear any of the great music composed by you and Mr. Porter and the entire Stax family was a blessing to all of us.
Rest in peace!
Love you always,
Trisha "maryland"
Ever since I visited stax a few years back I was hooked on the Black Moses and Hot Buttered Soul albums....even in the last week or so I had been playing "a brand new man" over and over to and from the studio. He has really inspired my music and life, and I know his music will live on for years to come. One of the major reasons Memphis is holy ground.
rest in peace..........
I was hit by a 'Brick' when my wife came to tell me of the lost of a true legend who has been in my life for so many years. I truly love Isaac Hayes so very much. There will never ever be another Isaac Hayes. His music, his movies, nothing will replace him never. I want his Family to know what he meant to me, and how sorry I am of their lost. May God Bless his soul. Isaac we love you Man!

When I visited Stax last summer I felt like I had come home. The music that came out of Stax touched my soul. A big part of that were the contributions made by Isaac Hayes. I Thank You Isaac. When I listen to Sam & Dave sing "I Thank You" or "When Something's Wrong with My Baby" or many other Sam & Dave songs I always think of the brilliance of Isaac Hayes [and Dave Porter]. I just turned 60. Isaac was only 65, way too young to leave us. He will always be remembered.
As a white teenager in the early 70s, I remember my dad playing the "Black Moses" album on the family "hi-fi stereo." Wanting to know who was behind that incredible sound I would stare at the album cover in awe of this "Black Moses," a man of Biblical stature the likes of which I had never seen before. Isaac Hayes bridged a gap between races and classes in a way that I recognize now was quiet and subtle yet as strong and resonating as his powerful voice.
When i heard the news i went strait to youtube and listened to a lot of his wonderful songs and read the comments of hundreds of his fans all over the world. not many get to leave a legacy like his. i join you all in the sorrow of his passing and also the joy of his having been here and inspired us so much.
What a terrible terrible loss to the music world and those who knew him best. We are saddened.
A true icon in the music world, what talent and moving voice!
His music is part of why I love the Memphis sound so much...
What a terrible loss. Isaac Hayes
set the direction for 70's Soul Music
and made history in doing so. Such a dominant figure. He left us a treasure of music to be enjoyed by everyone for generations to come.
I was compelled to play "Shaft" this morning in the car and got all teary eyed in doing so.
Peace
Keith,
Bronx, NY
What a loss to the world of music!
though time will travels on...
Isaac Hayes will remain in the heart always!
When I heard the bad news, I was very sad. Since the early seventies I am an Isaac-fan, he and his music was part of my life during all those years!
And how surprised we were when he visited us in 1989 when we had a party because we were married for 12 1/2 years, after he had a performance in Tilburg, The Netherlands!!!! This is still a very precious memory for us! We joined several concerts and a year ago we went to London for his concert at Sheperd's Bush Empire, the very last time we have seen him. Unfortunately he was not the old Isaac anymore, after his stroke.
Although I am glad that we have been there and even met him shortly afterwards the concert.
In october 2007 we went to Memphis en visited the Stax-museum and Isaac's restaurant and shop at Peabodyplace, but regrettably both were closed.
My thoughts go to his family en also to "Skip", his fantastic wah-wah guitar-player, and "buddy" during al those years.
Isaac, rest in peace, we always keep you in our hearts and minds.
Lia Koenen, The Netherlands
Black Moses! Your a Bad Mutha! Opps, im just talking bout you Isaac I met the man in the early 80's before his tv come back. He was a very gracious person! Rest in peace
Thank you Issac for being part of the music fabric of my life. See you on the other side
I remember learning to play drums to the Shaft soundtrack when I was growing up. Even since, I've been hooked on Isaac Hayes. He was an immensely talented individual.
I was so moved by Issac Hayes passing.I have so many fun memories of seeing Isaac Hayes at our almuni Manassas High School Talent Shows. I am very proud to have had the opportunity to have
known Issac Hayes music and the man from afar on the radio,TV,movie and at his restaurant in Memphis. My deepest sympathy to his wife and family. Issac's music will always help me never say good bye.
I was about 15 when I first heard the soundtrack to Shaft. As a white suburban middle-class kid from Ft. Wayne, IN, I was about as far removed from the streets of Harlem as anyone could be, but it didn't matter. It was the music that touched me; it's still one of my favorite records. And when I heard his 18-minute version of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," I could never hear Glen Campbell the same way again. RIP Isaac--and thank you.
Isaac Hayes was a bad mother.........
Thanks for getting me through my teen age years with Sam and Dave, thanks for getting me through the 70's with "I Stand Accused"...Thanks for the memories. Soul Heaven must be rocking tonight, hope that wherever Black Moses is he is playing "Don't Let Go". Say hello to Otis, Johnnie Taylor and Joe Tex. You cats won't be forgotten.
Heard the news yesterday in England when our 12 year olds son rang me at work and was deeply saddened. We had sat together and listen to “Shaft” only last week when it came on the radio in the car, I told him this was the guy who’s Gold Cadillac we’d seen in the Stax Museum last year. Isaac’s music will live on long after most of us have gone, his contribution to SOUL music legendary and he stands shoulder to shoulder with the truly “greats” of the music.
Rest in Peace Isaac our thoughts are with your family and extended family at STAX

I'm so glad I got to see him last year. His music was the soundtrack to so much of those years - he truly was a giant of a man and a truly great musician. How he will be missed: RIP Isaac RIP
Isaac,
I never can say goodbye, but By the TimeI get to Phoenix, I Walk on by.
Cheers pal.
Blessed by his show in June (Prospect Park, Brooklyn), and enlightened by a lifetime of Isaac's songwriting, musicianship and humanity, I give my thanks for all the love he shared.
RIP Black Moses.
I first heard of Isaac when "Theme From Shaft" was a hit here in Australia in 1971 (sadly, one of only a handful of Stax hits here). Only later did I find out that he and David Porter wrote the bulk of Sam and Dave's hits, and then I dug deeper and discovered "B-A-B-Y", "Your Good Thing", "I'll Run Your Hurt Away", "The Sweeter He Is" and so many, magical others. Later came "Joy", "Disco Connection", the duets with Millie Jackson & Dionne Warwick, and finally another Aussie hit with "Don't Let Go". The BRANDED album in the 90's was a terrific return to form. Rest easy, brother, and condolences to your family, friends, and the whole Soulsville/Stax community.
Although another great has left us, with luck the publicity will encourage a new set of fans to check the music..and old ones to play it louder!!
It is a timely reminder how far in this media/celebrity obsessed world some talentless fools get! Isaac didn't get the riches - the fans did.
All I can say is that his talent was strong enough to reach my little provincial town in the south of England and saved me from a life of bad music. Thanks Isaac!!

All I want to say is thank you, Isaac. Your music is, and will always be, just like your life was here with us: inspiring. Love you, Brother!
Issac's release of the Hot Buttered Soul album changed the way soul had been heard in the north of England. He was a pioneer in his field and he will be sadly missed.
I remember his old house on South Lauderdale. I remember riding my bicycle to Boss Ugly Bob's on 3rd street and buying that Hot Buttered Soul album and that Live in Sahara/Tahoe album.I'm 41 now.I still got his autograph when i saw him in the Mall of Memphis in the 90's. I got it forever!!! Isaac Hayes is Memphis' Black Elvis. I Love Stax. I used to work at Jones Big Star across the street from the OLD STAX. Memphis and The World has lost one of the best! WE MISS YOU!!!!
What sad news about the death of Isaac Hayes. I had the opportunity to meet Isaac in the 80s when I was producing PSAs for the Arthritis Foundation National Office in Atlanta. Isaac frequently recorded at Master Sound Studio on Spring Street in midtown. The engineer, the late Tom Hughes, and I talked to Isaac about the disease Lupus and its effect on African Americans. Isaac asked me to script several PSAs that he recorded and set to music.
When I went to the studio to pick up the finished tapes, I was pressed for time to ship the boxes to my national distributor, and it was during a very heavy rainstorm. Isaac sensed my frustration, removed his shoes and socks, rolled up his pant legs, grabbed a garbage bag and off we went to my car. After two more rain-soaked trips, I pulled away and made it on time. The PSAs were well-received by radio stations throughout the nation.
I never ran into Isaac at Master Sound or anywhere else after that day, but it remains a great memory of a great man.
Please pass along my sincerest sympathy to Isaac’s family and friends.

Isaac, you were the greatest. Your recording of "Walk on by" is so beautiful. Isaac recorded a few records for my father in the late 60's at San American Studios in Little Rock Arkansas....to the family, we love you all and our prayers are with you. You can call me at 870-530-4274, I would love to tell you some of the great things my father says about Isaac. Ask for Marty McGinnis.....
Isaac Hayes was great icon and his music will be the heart of the people.
Isaac, you were great, not only as a singer but songwriter as well. You will surely be missed.
The words icon & legend are relevant when describing Isaac Hayes. His distinctive bald head at a time when the afro was the hairstyle says it all. His music is still with us, "Hot Buttered Soul", "Black Moses", "Shaft", his contribution as songwriter and session musician to the great STAX label. That's the great legacy Issac has left us.
Even more sad just after I watched an excellent documentary about the STAX label broadcast on the BBC a few weeks ago where Isaac & David Porter spoke about their time at STAX.
Issac may you rest in peace.

Was One Of The Best Entertainers In My Opinion, A Songwriter, A Producer, A Performer, An Actor, A True Humanitarian, And Part Of The Stax Soul Sound, All Those Great Sam And Dave Songs He Co-wrote With David Porter, Not To Mention The "shaft" Soundtrack, The "THREE TOUGH GUYS" Soundtrack, Which I Have And Love The Film, "THREE TOUGH GUYS", He's Great In That Film..., And "CHEF" In Southpark..., He'll Be Sadly Missed.... Here's To You Isaac.... - JUSTIN
R.I.P. Mr. Hayes...his music livews 4 ever in our hearts and souls...
I'm listening right now "I Stand accuse" from him...
I'm with all of you ther in Stax...
From San Cristóbal Venezuela Southamerica...I'm sending my support and love...
Never knew him personally, however, I think that anyone who listened to his music felt that they knew him. He was a big part of my life and will continue to live in my heart. I was blessed to be a part of the celebration as our sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, in Memphis,TN honored him. What a blessing it was to a part of that grand event. My prayers go out to his family. It takes time to heal, but knowing that he accomplished a lot in his life and touched so many lives is truly a sign of greatness. God Bless!

Isaac Hayes was and is the most remarkable artist of our time. He will greatly missed. He represented power to our People. He was our "Moses" and will always be remembered in our hearts.

Although I used to really love Issac as a musician, for me he will most be remembered for the fantastic songs he wrote with David Porter. Back in the 60's when I was just a teenager buying soul records in London to play at my local youth club, song like Soul Man and You don't know like I know were great floor fillers, but Hold on I'm Coming really knocked everyone out. Eventually last year I made to Memphis and only when I was at the Stax Museum did I realise just how many tunes these two greats had put together. Standing on site of the great Stax studio and outside the Lorraine Motel I was sure I could be feel the Soul. The tunes will be played for a long long time and with them the soul of Isaac Hayes will live on. In the words of another great Let's keep on keeping on keeping the music alive.
